A life transformed

Archana Nehra has transformed her life – giving up a demanding career as an IT consultant to become a full-time artist, as well as downsizing into a new Bellway apartment. The 56-year-old began to reassess during the pandemic and made the decision to pursue her long-held dream of becoming an artist.

Around the same time, she decided to move out of her 1930s two-bedroom maisonette in Gidea Park to search for something that suited the new life she was planning.

Spacious open-plan living

With spacious rooms and an open-plan design in the main living area, there is plenty of space to set up her easel in full light. Now, the self-taught artist (who specialises in oil on canvas) is forging ahead with her new way of life. She has exhibited in Paris and sold a piece there, and she takes art classes with hopes of embarking on an art degree at some point.

She describes her artwork as ‘very flamboyant’, often depicting Rajasthani women as well as abstract subjects. She displays it through her Instagram account @anehra14, which also links to her Etsy store where her work is for sale.

Archana says: "Being somewhere light and bright makes such a difference. I enjoy being here and I have the freedom and space to continue with my art. God answered my prayers when I found this."

I saw this development and I thought this looks interesting, why hadn’t I seen it earlier? I came in and met the sales team and they were so good. I saw the brochure and I saw the showhome and I thought ‘wow’.”

I love it

“It’s airy and light, and being on the first floor I can get views of the parks around us, and the bathroom is smashing. I love it."

Now Archana is settling in, starting to get to know her neighbours, enjoying cooking in her new kitchen, and inviting friends around to visit, as well as creating new artwork.

“Being somewhere light and bright makes such a difference. I enjoy being here and I have the freedom and space to continue with my art. God answered my prayers when I found this.”

"The thing I like is it doesn’t feel like a block of flats. They look more like maisonettes as they are just one or two levels; they look like houses, so the look and the feel are fabulous. When it came along, I jumped at it as this is exactly what I wanted." – Archana

It’s even better than I thought

Archana only began to appreciate the benefit of living so close to Hornchurch Country Park once she moved in and now walks there every day.

“I love all the greenery that surrounds me, and it was a joy to discover the country park next door where there is a small lake and a café. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

“It’s even better than I thought. I’m doubly happy because I have the big bonus of the park and I rely on exercise to keep healthy.”
