A dream come true

Nurses Salvador and Garlene have been able to buy their first house thanks to our £20,000 mortgage contribution.

The couple – who both work in South London, having moved from the Philippines – have purchased a two-bedroom home at our Highlands Grange development in Swanley, Kent.

Salvador said: “We left our home in the Philippines to make a better future for ourselves and our son Brent in England. Our dream was to get a job, get married and buy our own home.

“Garlene moved here on her own in 2017 to work as a nurse, then I and Brent joined her in 2020 after I also got a job as nurse. We got married in 2020 and we have now fulfilled the last part of our dream by buying a home together.”

Helped by Bellway's mortgage contribution

Salvador, 41, and Garlene, 39, were previously renting a two-bedroom flat in Peckham where they lived with their son Brent, now 20.

“Our plan was always to get our own place as soon as we could,” said Salvador. “By early 2024 we had saved about £20,000 as a deposit, so we decided to look around to see if we could afford to buy a place anywhere but knew that would be difficult in London.

“We wanted at least two bedrooms, a garden and to be within an hour’s commute to work at the hospital. Everything seemed to be out of our budget but then Garlene spotted Highlands Grange, which was out in Swanley in Kent and, crucially, Bellway was offering a five per cent mortgage contribution.

“This meant that with only £20,000 we were able to afford a house costing £400,000 or so because Bellway would give us £20,000 to make up to a 10 per cent deposit and make the monthly mortgage payments affordable for us.”

We went along and fell in love with the place. We both knew instantly that there was where we wanted to live.”

The perfect place to call home

The couple went along to Highlands Grange and loved the development and its location.

“We went along and fell in love with the place,” Salvador said. “We both knew instantly that there was where we wanted to live. We viewed a showhome and were impressed by the design and by the high quality of the finish and build.

“Both of us were keen to move out of London as Peckham was incredibly busy and noisy and we wanted somewhere quieter so we could be outdoors and relax and enjoy our time off because of our stressful jobs. The area around Highlands Grange is lovely and green and you really feel like you are out in the country, a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

“As first-time buyers we didn’t really know what to expect when buying a house but the sales team were great and helped us every step of the way. We were absolutely delighted with the mortgage contribution from Bellway because without that we would not have been able to afford to buy a lovely brand-new house like this.”

"We love everything about our new home" – Salvador

The perfect buying experience

Salvador, Garlene and Brent moved into their £410,000 Potter type home in February 2025.

“We love everything about our new home but perhaps the best thing for us is the back garden,” Salvador said. “In Peckham, we were living in a second-floor flat and had no access to our own outdoor space. Here we have French doors from the living/dining area into the back garden.

“We have plans to make the garden look really lovely and have had it turfed. We can’t wait to get out there and have barbecues with our friends. It is going to be wonderful to finish work, come home and just chill in our own private space outside our back door. The downstairs layout suits our lifestyle perfectly as we have the big dining/living area with the access to the garden while the kitchen is a separate room.

The family said that the location of the development is ideal. “It only takes us slightly longer to get to work at the hospital in Denmark Hill than it did when we lived in Peckham. Swanley railway station is a five-minute drive, a 10-minute bike ride or a 30-minute walk from our house. There we can get a fast train which gets to Denmark Hill in as little as 23 minutes.
