The Killingworth Centre is a short walk from the development and is home to a large supermarket, as well as a selection of smaller stores. Slightly further afield, a number of high-street chains can be found at Silverlink Shopping Park, which also has a multi-screen cinema and several popular restaurants on site.

The Metrocentre – one of the largest shopping malls in Europe with more than 300 retailers, can be reached in around 20 minutes by car, while Newcastle city centre, with its designer and speciality boutiques, Edwardian Central Arcade, Eldon Square Shopping Centre and world-class department stores, is just 15 minutes away by car.


Sports fans will find an excellent selection of facilities and clubs easily accessible from Southgate Park. Newcastle Racecourse is just two miles from the development and there are four golf clubs – Parklands, Northumberland, City of Newcastle and Gosforth – around 10 minutes’ drive away.

The Lakeside Centre has a sports hall, sports courts and pitches, a gym and two swimming pools, while neighbouring Lakeside Park has a children’s playground, grass activity areas, wildlife zones and a fishing lake.

Walking, horse riding and cycling are popular pursuits within the Rising Sun Country Park in Benton, two miles away. The 400-acre park is also a local nature reserve, with habitats including a lake, wetlands, woodland and grassland.

Northumberland’s coast and countryside also provide many opportunities for walking, hiking, watersports – such as diving, canoeing and surfing – and rock climbing.

Multi-screen cinemas can be found at the Silverlink Shopping Park and in Cramlington, five miles away, as well as in Newcastle and Gateshead. World and arthouse films are screened regularly at the independent Tyneside Cinema in central Newcastle.

Live music and entertainment venues include the Playhouse in Whitley Bay, the O2 Arena in Newcastle and The Sage in Gateshead.


Well-regarded schools near Southgate Park, include Westmoor and Bailey Green primary schools for younger children, and George Stephenson High School for older pupils. Tyne Metropolitan College and Northumberland College – both around 15 minutes by car from the development – provide a range of apprenticeships and higher education courses for students. Undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes are offered by universities in Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham.


The A1 and the A19 are easily accessible from Southgate Park and can be reached within 10 minutes by car. The Tyne and Wear Metro system serves this area, with the nearest stations being Palmersville and Benton, five minutes’ drive away. Both are on the Yellow Line that runs along the coast, through Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and North Shields, as well as through Newcastle city centre, Gateshead and Jarrow to South Shields. National rail services operate through Newcastle Central Station to Edinburgh, Durham, York, Doncaster, Peterborough and London Kings Cross, on the East Coast Main Line. In addition, frequent bus services connect Killingworth with surrounding towns and villages. Newcastle Airport is eight miles from the development, via the A1 and the A696.
