Finchale Drive is situated in Great Lumley, five minutes’ drive from the centre of Chester-le-Street. The development is around seven miles from Durham and 12 miles from Newcastle city centre. Nearby roads include the A1 and the A167.
The development lies within the administrative boundaries of Great Lumley Parish Council and Durham County Council.
A number of well-regarded schools can be found in the local area, such as Lumley Infant and Nursery, Lumley Junior and Woodlea Primary schools. Older students are catered for by Park View School and St Robert of Newminster Roman Catholic School, both within 10 minutes’ drive of the development. New College Durham, which offers a range of apprenticeships, A levels, further and higher education courses, can be reached in around 15 minutes by car.
There are several shops within walking distance of the development, but local shopping focuses on Chester-le-Street, around three miles away, especially St Cuthbert’s Walk Shopping Centre and the twice weekly market which takes place on Friday and Saturday.
Further afield, Durham city centre offers a plethora of shops throughout its commercial heart, including those at The Riverwalk and Prince Bishop’s Centre, as well as along its many meandering and historic streets. Discover high-street names, designer boutiques, specialist retailers and independents, as well as a wide choice of restaurants, wine bars, traditional pubs and cafés.
The semi-rural setting of Finchale Drive means residents can benefit from many opportunities for outdoor pursuits on their doorstep, including walking, hiking, cycling and horse riding. Yet being close to Chester-le-Street and Durham means they can also enjoy the many amenities of these towns, such as Riverside Park, with its walk along the River Wear, children’s play area, bowling club and gardens (less than two miles away), or the historic cathedral and castle in Durham – both a world heritage site – eight miles away.
Sports facilities include Chester-le-Street Leisure Centre, which has two swimming pools, a gym, fitness studios and squash courts, and Riverside Leisure Complex, which is home to an athletics track, football pitches, tennis courts and sports hall. Both can be reached in around five minutes by car.
Durham County Cricket Club is based at Emirates Riverside, less than two miles from Finchale Drive. The ground is also an important live music venue, playing host to international bands and pop stars such as Rod Stewart and Elton John.
Beamish Museum – the open-air museum that tells the story of North East life and heritage in the 19th and 20th centuries – is also close to the development and can be reached in around 10 minutes by car.
Major roads easily accessible from the development include the A167 and the A1. The nearest train station is Chester-le-Street and from there regular services run to Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, York, Leeds and Manchester, among other destinations. Public buses link the development with surrounding towns and villages, and Durham Park and Ride is around 10 minutes’ drive away. For domestic and international flights, Newcastle Airport is around 30 minutes away by car via the A1.
