Cholsey village lies approximately 15 miles to the southeast of Oxford. From the A34, Yew Tree Gardens is around 15 minutes away by car.
Cholsey provides a selection of local village stores and a supermarket, which can be found within about five minutes’ walk of Yew Tree Gardens. Also situated nearby are an Indian restaurant and a country pub; Wallingford, a short drive from the development, offers a variety of restaurants, bars, cafes and high street and independent shops in its town centre. Popular eateries include The Old Post Office, which serves an extensive brunch menu in addition to wood-fired pizzas, steaks and burgers, while The Partridge Inn serves a traditional British menu and hearty Sunday lunches.
Reading, which can be reached in under half an hour by car, offers a diverse retail experience and benefits from a large riverside complex with a broad range of well-known high street brands and restaurants, plus a multiplex cinema. Further choice can be found along Broad Street, the town’s pedestrianised shopping precinct, which also has an indoor mall. The town also has an interesting dining scene, with award-winning establishments such as the Thames Lido serving Mediterranean-inspired dishes, which can be enjoyed after a swim in the Grade II-listed outdoor pool.
For an exceptional culinary experience, chef Raymond Blanc’s Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons is around 25 minutes’ drive from Cholsey. This celebrated restaurant bears two Michelin stars, and boasts a grand manor house location, surrounded by picturesque gardens in which many of the ingredients used are grown.
An attractive village situated on the banks of the River Thames, Cholsey benefits from its close proximity to the open countryside of the Berkshire Downs. The Thames Path follows the river north to Wallingford, or south to Moulsford; along with ample opportunities for hiking, running and cycling, the Berkshire Downs also provide a number of interesting family attractions. These include Beale Park, a wildlife park spanning 30 acres; The Living Rainforest, an indoor rainforest with tropical plants, birds, lizards and monkeys, and Greys Court, a National Trust-owned Tudor mansion with magnificent gardens, an orchard and a turf maze.
Five minutes’ drive away, Wallingford – which was used as a filming location for the fictional town of Causton in the television show Midsomer Murders – has several historical landmarks including the ruins of its castle, which are set within beautiful gardens. A cultural highlight, the Corn Exchange theatre hosts regular comedy and music performances, plays and movie screenings.
This market town is also home to the boat house of Oxford University Boat Club, and its teams can frequently be seen training on the river ahead of the annual Boat Race against Cambridge. Wallingford also boasts an outdoor heated swimming pool and children’s splash park by the river, open during the summer months.
Yew Tree Gardens is located within easy reach of several primary and secondary schools, including well-regarded independent institutions.
For younger pupils, Cholsey Primary School is about half a mile from the development; South Stoke Primary School can be reached in around 10 minutes’ drive. Private education for children aged 4-13 is provided at Moulsford Preparatory School, while the independent Cranford House School welcomes girls aged 2-16 and boys aged 2-11. Both are situated less than a 10-minute car journey away from Yew Tree Gardens.
Secondary-age students are served by Wallingford School, about three miles from Cholsey.
Those interested in pursuing further education will find Carmel College approximately five minutes’ drive away, and offering post-16 courses along with degree programmes. University of Reading, and University of Oxford – ranked 1st in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019 – are also commutable from the village.
Ideally located for commuters, Yew Tree Gardens is situated around eight miles from the A34 for Oxford and Newbury, and approximately 25 minutes’ drive from the M40 for High Wycombe and the M25 London Orbital Motorway. Reading town centre is about a 25-minute car journey away.
Cholsey railway station, less than a mile from the development, provides direct services to London Paddington, Didcot Parkway, Oxford and Reading. The journey time to London Paddington is around an hour.
For air travel, Heathrow Airport can be reached in under an hour by car.
