These are focused around The Sanderson Arcade, Newgate Street, Oldgate and Bridge Street – home to independent department store Rutherford & Co.

Further afield, the cosmopolitan shopping district of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Metrocentre in Gateshead – one of the largest malls in Europe – draw visitors from across the region.

Sports facilities in the local area include Ashington Leisure Centre, less than two miles from the development, which has two swimming pools, a gym, spa, fitness studio and sports hall. Wansbeck Riverside Park also offers water-based activities such as rowing and canoeing, and has a children’s play area. This local nature reserve can be reached in less than 10 minutes by car. Further play areas are situated in Hirst Park in the centre of Ashington, which also has tennis courts, two bowling greens and flower gardens, and is currently the subject of ongoing regeneration work.

The coastal town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is just two miles from Essendene Rise and the popular seaside resorts of Whitley Bay and Tynemouth can both be reached in around half an hour by car.

For families, there are several well-regarded schools in the area, including Bothal Primary School, St Aidan’s RC Voluntary Aided First School and Stakeford Primary School.
