Shopping

A number of high-street and independent stores can be found along Station Road, less than two miles from Essendene Rise and there are three supermarkets around five minutes’ drive from the development.

Morpeth, around 15 minutes away by car, is popular with locals and tourists, attracted by its blend of well-known stores, boutiques, specialist retailers, restaurants and cafés. These are focused around The Sanderson Arcade, Newgate Street, Oldgate and Bridge Street – home to independent department store Rutherford & Co.

Further afield, the cosmopolitan shopping district of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Metrocentre in Gateshead – one of the largest malls in Europe – draw visitors from across the region.

Leisure

Sports facilities in the local area include Ashington Leisure Centre, less than two miles from the development, which has two swimming pools, a gym, spa, fitness studio and sports hall. There are two golf clubs easily accessible from the development – Newbiggin Golf Club, two miles away and Longhirst Hall Golf Club, eight miles away.

The QEII Country Park, around five minutes’ drive from Essendene Rise, offers opportunities for water sports such as canoeing, open-water swimming and windsurfing, as well as walking trails, cycle paths and wildlife habitat. Wansbeck Riverside Park also offers water-based activities such as rowing and canoeing, and has a children’s play area. This local nature reserve can be reached in less than 10 minutes by car. Further play areas are situated in Hirst Park in the centre of Ashington, which also has tennis courts, two bowling greens and flower gardens, and is currently the subject of ongoing regeneration work.

The coastal town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is just two miles from Essendene Rise and the popular seaside resorts of Whitley Bay and Tynemouth can both be reached in around half an hour by car.

Education

For families, there are several well-regarded schools in the area, including Bothal Primary School, St Aidan’s RC Voluntary Aided First School and Stakeford Primary School. Northumberland College has a campus in Ashington and provides a range of apprenticeships, vocational and academic courses. Newcastle University and Northumbria University can both be reached in around 35 minutes by car.

Transport

The development is conveniently placed for accessing the A189, which in turn links with the A19, 10 minutes’ drive away, for travel to Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. Trains run from Morpeth Railway Station, six miles away, to Newcastle Central Station for connection with many other national services; some direct services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, York and London King’s Cross also stop at Morpeth.
