Stylish new homes in Colchester

The Orchards is a development of new homes in Colchester, located 10 minutes by car from the town centre, 27 miles from Chelmsford and 70 miles from London.

The development lies within the administrative boundaries of Colchester Town Council and Essex County Council.

The local area

Everyday essentials can be purchased at a large supermarket, just a few minutes’ drive away; Turner Rise Retail Park, two miles away, also has a supermarket, as well as a selection of homewares stores.

Three shopping centres can be found in the heart of the town: Lion Walk, Culver Square and St John’s Walk are home to a variety of well-known brands, as well as specialist and independent retailers. Long Wyre Street, Sir Isaac’s Walk, Culver Street, High Street and Head Street complete this busy commercial hub, and offer a wealth of cafés, restaurants, wine bars and traditional pubs to tempt visitors. A general market is held on High Street every Friday and Saturday, and a farmers’ market takes place once a month in the arts centre on Church Street.

Colchester is steeped in history, with evidence of its past everywhere, from the remains of the town walls built by the Romans and said to be the oldest in Britain, to the 11th century Colchester Castle – the largest Norman keep in Europe. Castle Park, which surrounds the keep, is popular with families, drawn by the well-equipped children’s play area, boating lake and gardens.

Set against a backdrop of lush countryside and picture postcard villages, such as Dedham, Langham and Nayland, the area is a delight for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The coast is just a car journey away, with Mersea Island, famous for its oysters, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton on the Naze all within 30 minutes’ drive of the development.

Leisure World on Cowdray Avenue has three swimming pools – the main one of which has flumes, water cannons and toddler areas – a gym, sports hall, exercise studios and outdoor football pitches. Colchester United FC’s home ground is two miles from The Orchards and Colchester Rugby Club is based on Mill Road, a few minutes’ drive away.

Cultural highlights include The Mercury Theatre, Colchester Art Centre, Firstsite, which hosts exhibitions, workshops, courses and film screenings, and live music venue Charter Hall.

For families, a number of well-regarded schools can be found locally, including Brinkley Grove, Highwoods Community and St John’s CE primary schools – all of which are within walking distance of The Orchards. The Gilberd and St Helena schools, Colchester Royal Grammar School and Colchester County High School for Girls are among those catering for secondary-age pupils. The Sixth Form College and Colchester Institute welcome students over the age of 16, providing a range of apprenticeships, academic and vocational courses. The University of Essex also has its main campus within the borough.

The development is ideally situated for accessing major roads and the public transport network. The A12 (for Ipswich, Lowestoft, Chelmsford and London), and the A120 (for Harwich, Braintree and Stansted Airport) are just a few minutes’ drive away. Colchester North, less than four miles away, is one of two railway stations in the town, with direct trains running from there to Ipswich, Chelmsford, Stratford and London Liverpool Street, among other destinations. Frequent bus services connect the area with surrounding towns and villages.
