Bury residents, this one’s all for you. Bury Council’s affordable housing scheme gives first-time buyers and home movers the chance to buy a home for 20% to 30% off the full market value.

From time to time, there are new Bellway homes in Bury available to buy under the scheme, and if you meet the criteria you can apply to make one of them yours.

Who can apply to the Bury Council affordable housing scheme?

The Bury Council affordable housing scheme is intended to help local first-time buyers get their feet on the ladder, and support individuals and families in finding low-cost homes that better suit their needs. To make sure the scheme targets the buyers it will benefit most, there are a few criteria you’ll have to meet before you apply.

There be eligible for the scheme, you’ll need to:

• have lived in the Bury borough for at least six months;

• have no current or former rent arrears or a history of anti-social behaviour;

• be planning to live in the home you’re buying and not rent it out;

• not own any other property;

• be able to afford the home you’re buying at the discounted price, but not the full market value.

How do I apply to the Bury Council affordable housing scheme?

Once you’ve checked that you tick all the boxes for the affordable housing scheme, you can go ahead and apply directly to Bury Council. They’ll look over your application and carry out any necessary checks, which might include a financial assessment.

You’ll find out within 10 working days whether your application’s been successful. If it has, then it’s exciting times ahead – you can have a look at the available properties under the scheme and let the council know if there’s one that catches your eye.
