Welcome to Pocklington, East Riding

Pocklington is a thriving market town in East Riding, set on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, offering many local amenities and with great connections to York, Beverley and Hull. 


Education

Families are well catered for, with a selection of well-regarded schools nearby, including Warter Church of England Primary School - an 11-minute drive from Wellington Grange - and St. Mary and St Joseph Primary School, which is a two-minute drive, or an 11-minute walk from home. 

Pocklington Independent School is four minutes away by car, serving children aged five to 18. This traditional school was founded in 1514 and includes a range of first-class sports facilities, spanning 21 acres of grounds with an indoor swimming pool. 

For older students, Woldgate College and Sixth Form is around a 20-minute walk, or a four-minute drive away and serves 11 to 18 year-olds. For higher education, the University of York is around a 22-minute drive from the development.


Transport 

Wellington Grange benefits from a range of good local road links, including ease of access to the A1079 York Road, which links to York, Beverley and Selby which are all less than a 40-minute drive from home, as well as Hull (approximately a 45-minute drive). 

York Railway Station is around a 33-minute drive from home and provides links to and from busy hubs such as York, Leeds, London, Liverpool, Newcastle and Edinburgh. 

There are regular bus services to York and Hull running through Pocklington.

The town is also popular with cyclists, with several cycling routes running through the town, including Fangfoss, Millington, Nunburnhome, Stamford Bridge, Warter and Yapham Mill circuits.  

For international travel, Leeds Bradford Airport is just over an hour’s drive from Wellington Grange. 


Shopping

Pocklington is a bustling market town, boasting many retail opportunities, from high-street and brand name stores, to a range of independent specialist retailers, including antique, furniture and cycling stores. There are also two local supermarkets and a food store, with the nearest large supermarket conveniently located around four minutes’ drive from Wellington Grange. 

Pocklington has a weekly, outdoor market, which is held within the town centre, offering a range of fresh, local produce, food and drink as well as handcrafted gifts and furniture. 

For further retail and leisure opportunities, York boasts some fabulous shopping areas among its cobbled streets, including high-street and well-known brand names, designer labels, independent retailers, books, antiques and vintage shops. It is also home to several popular shopping centres and parks, including Coppergate Shopping Centre, Monks Cross Shopping Park and York Designer Outlet.


Eating and Drinking

Residents of these new homes in Pocklington can benefit from a range of family-friendly dining options within the town, including cafés, bars, restaurants and delicatessens. 

For pubs, The Black Bull and Judson’s Wine Bar and Restaurant are both approximately 10 minutes’ walk from Wellington Grange.

For special occasions, Yorkshire currently holds the record for the largest number of restaurants awarded Michelin stars compared to other UK counties. Award-winning restaurants include The Pipe and Glass in South Dalton (only a 28-minute drive by car), while The Star Inn at Harome and The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds are less than an hour’s drive away from home.  


Leisure 

Residents of Wellington Grange can benefit from picturesque views over the surrounding Yorkshire Wolds and countryside, from the north and east of the development. 

Pocklington is ideally placed for outdoor pursuits and is very popular with cyclists, with Wilberforce Way and White Rose Cycle Route running through the town, as well as the local Fangfoss, Millington, Nunburnhome, Stamford Bridge, Warter and Yapham Mill circuits. There are also several popular walks running around Pocklington and through to the surrounding Yorkshire countryside, including the Pocklington Circuit, North Wolds Walk, Wilberforce Way and the Yorkshire Wolds Way. 

Wellington Grange is only a three-minute drive from Burnby Hall Gardens. This popular visitor attraction boasts beautiful gardens, lakes and the largest collection of Water Lilies in a natural setting in Europe. Pocklington Canal is approximately a 15-minute drive away. A popular area for walks and picnics, the canal has been named as one of the top ten places for waterside wildlife in Britain. 

There are excellent sporting facilities in Pocklington, including nearby KP Golf Club (a six-minute drive from the development) which boasts a championship, 18-hole golf course set in 180 acres of woodlands, a bar and restaurant, a health and fitness studio, golf shop and Nordic relaxation area. Pocklington also has gliding, running and rugby clubs and a leisure centre – East Riding Leisure Francis Scaife. The centre offers a gym, sports hall, swimming pool and exercise studio, and is only a four-minute drive from Wellington Grange. 

Pocklington Arts Centre offers films and regular live events including theatre, comedy, art exhibitions and workshops, and is only a two-minute drive from Wellington Grange. 

Pocklington is a historic market town with a rich history to be explored. The attractive town centre boasts a 15th century Church Tower and many quaint, old buildings. Pocklington also has its own working town crier, of which there are only 200 in the UK. 

Wharram Percy is one of Britain’s largest and most preserved medieval villages, dating back to the 1500s. Just under a 30-minute drive from home and extensively explored by archaeologists, the village includes the outlines of medieval houses, remains of the millpond, a standing farmhouse from the 18th century and the ruins of St. Martin’s medieval church. 

Nearby York also boasts a selection of historical attractions, museums and monuments including York Cathedral, York Castle, the Jorvik Viking Museum and the National Railway Museum. 

The east coast is within easy reach of Wellington Grange, with popular seaside towns such as Scarborough and Whitby, approximately one hour’s drive and a one-hour 15-minute drive away respectively.

Pocklington falls within the boundaries of East Riding of Yorkshire Council and also has its own Pocklington Town Council.
