Old St Mellons is an area to the east of Cardiff, benefitting from close proximity to the wealth of amenities that the Welsh capital has to offer.

Nearby Cardiff Gate Retail Park offers several brand name home stores, a large supermarket, a gym and some casual dining options, including a family-friendly chain pub with a carvery. 

Cardiff is a popular UK shopping destination, providing an impressive selection of well-known high street stores, designer labels and independent boutiques. The city offers a mix of contemporary shopping malls, as well as traditional Victorian and Edwardian shopping arcades. St David’s is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK, boasting around 180 stores from high-street fashion to designer labels. In addition, there are several department stores, a flagship high-street fashion store and a wide selection of dining options. 

Cardiff Market is held within an impressive Victorian indoor market hall, offering visitors an array of fresh local produce and baked goods, as well as homewares and gifts. 


Education

There are several well-regarded schools in the area, to accommodate families with children. St Mellons primary school is within close proximity to the development, while Corpus Christi Catholic High School is within approximately 10 minutes’ drive from Highfields. 

For independent schools, there is also St John’s College, a mixed day school, serving ages three to 18, around three miles away from the development.

Those interested in pursuing further study will benefit from close proximity to both Cardiff University (a top five UK university for research excellence and impact) and The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Both establishments are a 15-minute drive from Highfields. 


Transport

Nearby major roads include the A48(M) and the M4, both of which can be accessed within three minutes by car. The A48 is to the west of Highfields and provides ease of access to Cardiff, around a 15-minute drive, and links to the M4, to the east, offering routes to Newport and Swansea. 

Llanishen train station is a 10-minute drive from Highfields and provides regular services to Penarth, Bargoed, Rhmney and Cardiff Central station. Cardiff Central boasts connections to London, Portsmouth, Manchester, Newport and Swansea.  For international travel, the nearest airport is Cardiff, around 20 miles away from home.

 

Leisure

Residents of Highfields will benefit from access to a range of leisure opportunities. Everyday fitness is covered by Pentwyn Leisure Centre which is around a mile and a half away from the development.  The centre offers a gym, fitness studio, swimming pool, sports hall, two squash courts and an outdoor five-a-side pitch. There is also a well-known gym chain within walking distance, at Cardiff Gate Retail Park.

Cardiff and St Mellon’s Golf Club are two 18-hole courses set in parkland, both around three miles from the development. 

Nearby Cardiff is renowned for its high-quality sports facilities, having hosted many international sporting events, from football and rugby to athletics, cricket and swimming. Cardiff International Sports Village boasts an ice rink and an Olympic sized swimming pool, while Cardiff International Pool offers an impressive 50-metre Olympic swimming pool, a leisure pool with fun slides, gym, sauna, steam room and spa. Principality Stadium is Wales’ national stadium, boasting a fully-retractable roof, the venue regularly hosts national and international football, rugby events and live music events. Cardiff City Stadium is home to the Welsh national football team, as well as Cardiff City, and hosts football events throughout the year.

Cardiff Bay is an area which has undergone major reinvestment. Featuring views of the harbour and local docklands area, this upcoming area has several shopping, dining and leisure opportunities and is home to the state-of-the-art Welsh Assembly building. There are two outdoor, water-based activity centres in Cardiff Bay. At Cardiff International White Water Centre, visitors can experience white water rafting, use the indoor surf machine or try the ‘Air Trail’ obstacle course; a rope obstacle course and zip wire, above the water. Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre offers jet-skiing, water polo and yachting. 

Cardiff is a capital which enjoys a long and vibrant history, which is demonstrated in the architecture of Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral, Castell Coch and Cardiff Castle. For art and history enthusiasts, there is also the National Museum, which includes world-class collections and exhibitions throughout the year.

For sci-fi enthusiasts, The Doctor Who experience is around a 20-minute drive away from home. 

For a trip to the coast, Penarth and Barry are within close proximity to Highfields. Penarth is the seaside area of Cardiff, where visitors can enjoy a stroll along the promenade and the beach. Nearby Barry is a popular tourist resort, noted for its beautiful beach and scenery, there is also a year-round funfair with amusements located on Barry Island. 


Eating and drinking

Highfields is a one-minute walk away from the Unicorn Inn, a family-friendly gastropub. 

Cardiff enjoys a growing reputation for its diverse dining circuit, with venues to suit all occasions and appetites. In Penarth, the coastal area of this city, there is the Michelin-starred James Sommerin restaurant, where diners can enjoy seaside views along with renowned tasting menus, which feature hearty dishes and eclectic deserts.
