Welcome to Chelmsford

Located just 39 miles from London, Chelmsford is popular with commuters working in the capital and offers a rich variety of shopping and leisure facilities to residents. The county town of Essex, it is surrounded by countryside and yet is within easy travelling distance of the coast.

 

Education

A number of primary and secondary schools are located near these new homes in Chelmsford, including Little Waltham CE Primary School, just six minutes drive away. Other primary schools in the area include Springfield Primary School, two miles from the development, Broomfield Primary School, three miles away and Great Waltham CE Primary, four miles away.

Older children are catered for by secondary schools in Chelmsford and the surrounding area, including Chelmer Valley High School, Hylands School, Moulsham High School and the independent New Hall School. King Edward VI Grammar School and Chelmsford County High School for Girls – two of the top performing schools in the country – are both less than four miles from Channels.

For post-16 education Chelmsford College offers a range of apprenticeships, further education and professional courses, while Writtle College, five miles away, specialises in land-based and design courses. Anglia Ruskin University has a campus in the city, Essex University is based at Colchester, 26 miles away and the University of East London at Docklands is 36 miles away.

 

Shopping

Less than 10 minutes drive from the city centre, Channels is in close proximity to Chelmsford’s main shopping areas. These include High Chelmer and Meadows shopping centres, High Street and Moulsham Street, where a mixture of well-known brand names and independent retailers can be found side by side.

Chelmsford Market, located next to High Chelmer Shopping Centre, was first held more than 800 years ago and is still going strong five days a week, with a more specialist food market held on Fridays and Saturdays in High Street. A regular farmers’ market takes place at Hylands House in Hylands Park, while outside Chelmsford, monthly farmers’ markets are held in Matching Tye, Hatfield Heath, Colchester and Barleylands Farm Park and Craft Village in Billericay.

Retail parks Chelmer Village, Homelands and Riverside are situated less than five miles of the development and are populated by a selection of high-street retailers and chain restaurants, while further afield Freeport Braintree offers designer shopping at outlet mall prices.

With London Liverpool Street just a 35-minute train journey from Chelmsford, the ultimate shopping experience is within easy reach, from the designer boutiques of Bond Street and Knightsbridge to the mass market appeal of Oxford Street and Westfield at Stratford City.

 

Eating and drinking

Good food can be found in Little Waltham at the Dog and Gun, which sources local, seasonal produce for its menus and offers al fresco dining on its terrace in summer, or at the White Hart, which has a range of dishes and cask ales available. Also in the village, Cairnsworths tea room and delicatessen offers a selection of artisan produce from local suppliers, as well as speciality coffees and afternoon tea.

Channels Golf Club, three minutes walk from the development, is home to two restaurants – The Bar & Brasserie at Channels and The Bistro at Little Channels – both of which serve a selection of light meals and à la carte dishes.

Chelmsford centre offers a wide selection of dining options, from traditional pubs to quaint cafés, bistros to chain restaurants, serving up dishes from around the world, including China, Italy, India and Greece.

Slightly further afield, the Bridge Street Lounge and Grill at Writtle (six miles from Channels) and the Spotted Dog at Barnston, 10 miles away, are both popular, with the latter offering a vegetarian menu and table d’ hôte, in addition to an à la carte menu.

 

Leisure

Little Waltham and Chelmsford are surrounded by countryside, so opportunities for walking, running, cycling, hiking, horse riding, or simply taking in the views are plentiful.

The Falcon Bowling Club and Channels Golf Club are both within a few minutes walk of the development, while within the city itself 22 public parks lend themselves to sport and leisure. Many of these offer play areas for children, sports pitches, tennis courts, flower gardens, woodland, or riverside walkways. Admirals Park and Central Park in the middle of town are particularly popular with families and city centre workers. 

Green Flag awarded Coronation Park is home to Chelmsford Rugby Club and Springfield Cricket Club, Chelmsford Sport and Athletic Stadium can be found at Melbourne Park, and Chelmer Park is home to Chelmsford Cricket Club and Chelmsford Hockey Club.

The East Anglian countryside is resplendent with stately homes, beautiful gardens, historic parkland and olde worlde villages all waiting to be explored. Just nine miles from these new homes in Chelmsford, Hylands House at Hylands Park is a grade II listed 18th century manor set in 574 acres of landscaped grounds; Ingatestone Hall, which dates back to the 16th century, is open to visitors over the summer and the Royal Horticultural Society’s Hyde Hall Garden, in Chelmsford, offers a programme of activities throughout the year.

The arts are well represented in Chelmsford, with a full programme of plays, concerts, comedy shows and workshops at the city’s two theatres – The Civic Theatre and the Cramphorn Theatre. Chelmsford Museum and The Essex Regiment Museum at Oaklands Park house permanent exhibitions and interactive displays focusing on the city’s past and prominence as the birthplace of radio, as well as featuring exhibitions by local artists. Live music finds a voice in many pubs and clubs throughout the city, as well as at the internationally renowned V Festival, which takes place every August at Hylands Park. For the latest blockbuster movies, local cinema the Odeon is situated next to Meadows Shopping Centre, or Vue at Stratford City, with its 17 screens, is one of the largest all-digital cinemas in Europe.

 

Travel

Chelmsford Railway Station is around 10 minutes drive from Channels and from there it is 25 minutes into Stratford (for DLR and London Underground Central Line) and 35 minutes into London Liverpool Street. Colchester, in the other direction, is around 20 minutes away, journey time to Ipswich is around 40 minutes and to Norwich 1 hour 24 minutes.

Major roads easily accessible from the development include the A12 (eight minutes drive away), which intersects with the M25 and the A406 North Circular in London; the A130, just two minutes drive away and the A120, 12 minutes away by car. Stansted Airport, which lies off the A120, is 15 miles from the development.
