Welcome to Barking

An ancient market town, Barking is situated east of London in the borough of Barking and Dagenham. Its vibrant shopping centre, colourful markets and excellent transport links with central London and Docklands all contribute to it being a popular place to live for people working in the capital.

 

Education

There are a number of schools within the vicinity of these new homes in Barking, with plans in the pipeline for more as part of the further redevelopment of Barking Riverside.

Several well-regarded primary schools cater for children up to the age of 11, including George Carey CE Primary School, which is less than half a mile from the development. Others include Ripple Primary, Gascoigne Primary and St Margaret’s CE Primary schools.

For older children, secondary schools in the area include the Jo Richardson Community School, Eastbury Comprehensive School and the recently opened Barking Riverside School. Several universities are easily accessible from the development, including the University of East London, the University of Greenwich and London Southbank University.

 

Shopping

For familiar high-street stores, independent retailers and niche boutiques, head for Barking town centre. Vicarage Field Shopping Centre brings together a selection of well-known brands and independents under one roof, as well as several cafés and food outlets. Barking market, just five minutes walk from Vicarage Field, is held four times a week and is home to stalls selling a wide variety of fresh produce, household goods and clothing.

Less than 10 minutes drive from the development, Gallions Reach Shopping Park features more than 40 high-street retailers and restaurants and has more than 2,000 parking spaces. It is also served by buses and Docklands Light Railway.

Around 20 minutes drive from Caspian Quarter, Westfield at Stratford City is one of the largest shopping centres in Europe, boasting 338 shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as a 17-screen cinema and a bowling alley.

From Stratford City, it’s just a few minutes by train into Liverpool Street, or 20 minutes via London Underground’s Central Line into the heart of London and the shopping meccas of Oxford Street, Bond Street and Marble Arch.

 

Leisure

Barking Riverside is situated alongside the Thames, benefiting from two kilometres (1.24 miles) of river frontage. More than 40 per cent of the site is dedicated to open space, which includes footpaths, cycle routes, parkland and an ecology park for the enjoyment of residents.

The local area also has its fair share of green space, including parks, country parks and nature reserves. Barking Park is the oldest in the borough and features a boating lake, tree-lined walkways, flower gardens, playing fields, a children’s play area and splash park. There is a skate park for older children and for sports fans, tennis courts, football pitches, indoor and outdoor bowling greens and a basketball court.

Other parks in town include Greatfields Park, Newlands Park and Mayesbrook Park – all within two miles of Caspian Quarter. Nearby Scrattons Farm Eco Park and Ripple Nature Reserve provide habitats for a variety of plants and wildlife. Around 10 minutes drive from the development, over the border in the borough of Newham, one of London’s oldest and largest city farms – Newham City Farm – offers a programme of events and workshops for children and families.

For fitness enthusiasts, the Abbey Leisure Centre offers a range of facilities, including excercies studios, two swimming pools and a gym, as well as a hydrotherapy pool, aromatherapy steam room and a sauna.

The Jim Peters Stadium at Mayesbrook Park, is home to athletics, cycling and running groups; Barking Football Club and Barking Cricket Club are also based at Mayesbrook Park.

For golf fans, the nearest clubs are Crowlands Heath Golf Club and Ilford Golf Club, both around five miles away.

Barking’s multicultural make-up ensures the town centre is home to a variety of restaurants, pubs, cafés and takeaways serving cuisine from around the world. Of course the area’s proximity to central London also means residents are always just a train journey away from award-winning restaurants, chic wine bars and artisan cafés.

 

Transport

These new homes in Barking enjoy excellent transport links with towns in the surrounding area, including central London.

Caspian Quarter is just 15 minutes drive from Canary Wharf, via the A13, which connects South Essex with London Docklands. The nearby A124 and A13 both link up with the A406 North Circular Road, which stretches across north London, linking the east with the west of the capital.

The nearest tube station to the development is Upney Underground Station, seven minutes drive away, which is on the District Line. Barking Railway Station is 10 minutes drive away and gives access to the District and Hammersmith & City Lines, London Overground services and National Rail to and from London Fenchurch Street, Southend-on-Sea and Shoeburyness in Essex.

Plans are in place to extend the London Overground Gospel Oak to Barking line to Barking Riverside, with completion expected by the end of 2019.

Fast and frequent 24-hour bus services operate as part of East London Transit, connecting Barking Riverside with Barking station, Ilford and Dagenham Dock.

For domestic and international air travel City Airport is five miles away and Stansted Airport 28 miles away.
