Atherton offers several shopping opportunities in its town centre, including a range of independent specialist retailers. For everyday essentials, the nearest supermarket is situated a two-minute drive from Summerhill Park. The town is also home to Ena Mill retail outlet, where shoppers will find a wide range of goods from well-known brand names, at discounted prices.

For further retail experiences, Parsonage Retail Park in nearby Leigh provides a wide choice of shopping outlets and dining options, while Manchester boasts several shopping districts, including everything from high-street brands to designer labels and independent boutiques. Manchester also has a number of popular shopping malls, including the Arndale and Trafford centres, each hosting over 200 retail stores and offering dining and entertainment options. For dining in the city, there are a broad variety of restaurants, pubs, bars, cafés and tea rooms to suit all tastes.

Nearer to the development, residents of these new homes in Atherton can benefit from family-friendly dining options within the town centre, including cafés, bars and restaurants. The town is home to some well-regarded pubs, a selection of which are within half a mile away from the development; among them is The Jolly Nailor, a traditional pub, found on Market Street. Offering real ales, homemade food and live music, the pub is named in recognition of the town’s history of producing nails.

Sports and leisure

Atherton is home to Howe Bridge Leisure Centre, which includes a gym, two swimming pools, a cycling studio, a children’s adventure playground, climbing walls and a skate park. There is also Atherton Roller Rink, an indoor, roller skating arena. The town has several areas of open green space nearby, including Central Park, which is close to the development and presents over 10 acres of parkland.

Film fans will find the nearest cinema in Leigh, around two and a half miles from Summerhill Park.

For live entertainment, The Octagon is a popular theatre in Wigan, housing regular plays and performances within its main auditorium, and is 20 minutes’ drive from the development. While Manchester is home to several theatres, including the Royal Exchange and the Palace. The city hosts a wealth of cultural attractions, including museums such as the Museum of Science and Industry, the Manchester Museum and the National Football Museum.


Families are well catered-for at Summerhill Park, with a selection of well-regarded schools nearby, including both St Michael’s and St Philip’s Church of England primary schools, which are around a five-minute walk from the development. For high school students, Fred Longworth High School is a six-minute drive from Summerhill Park and Atherton Community School is just over a five-minute walk.

For higher education, Manchester University is 35 minutes’ drive from the development.


Summerhill Park benefits from a range of good local road links, including ease of access to Manchester (within less than 40 minutes) via the A580 and A577. Wigan can also be accessed via the A577 and is less than a 25-minute drive away. For motorways, there are several options. The M6, for example, is accessible within less than 20 minutes’ drive, leading to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Lancaster and Carlisle, before terminating as far north as Gretna.

Both Atherton and Hag Fold train stations are within a mile and a half away from the development and provide services to Wigan. While trains from Atherton also run to Manchester, Blackpool and Southport, from Hag Fold they travel to Huddersfield, Blackburn and Merseyside.

Regular bus services also run through Atherton to Manchester, Wigan and other local towns.

For international travel, Manchester Airport is around a half hours’ drive from Summerhill Park.
