Several well-regarded schools can be found in the local area. For younger children, Heighington CE Primary School is a short walk from Meadow Rise, while St Francis CE Aided Junior School, Walworth School, Horndale Infant School and Byerley Park Primary School are all less than 10 minutes’ drive away. For older children, Woodham Academy in Newton Aycliffe is around four miles away and King James I Academy in Bishop Auckland is around six miles away. Aycliffe Business Park is home to UTC South Durham, a technical school and sixth form that caters for students aged 14 – 19 years.

For everyday essentials, the village store is just five minutes’ walk from Meadow Rise, while Newton Aycliffe, three miles away, has several supermarkets and high-street stores. Darlington, around six miles to the south, offers a wide selection of well-known retailers, independents, department and chain stores within its Cornmill and Queen Street shopping centres, and along High Row and surrounding streets. The town also has an indoor market hall and hosts an outdoor market twice a week.

Picturesque Heighington has a traditional village green and a hall, which is home to a cinema club and café. Neighbouring Newton Aycliffe has a number of parks and recreation areas, such as Town Park, which has play areas for toddlers and older children, and Simpasture Park, which has a games area and tennis courts. Oakleaf Sports Complex, two miles from the development, offers a range of facilities and activities, including sports courts and pitches, fitness classes and indoor bowls, while Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, around three miles away, has two swimming pools, a sports hall and a gym. Greenfield Tennis Club and Ineos Golf Club are both around five minutes’ drive from Meadow Rise. Popular cultural destinations nearby include Darlington Hippodrome, which presents a programme of drama, musicals and family entertainment, and The Forum, which stages live music and comedy events, as well as being home to the town’s Film Club. Darlington also has two multi-screen cinemas as well as a variety of restaurants, bars and cafés.

Major routes easily accessible from the development include the A68 for Darlington, Consett and Edinburgh, and the A1 for Durham, Newcastle, Leeds and Doncaster. Heighington Railway Station can be reached in five minutes by car and from there regular services run to Newton Aycliffe, Darlington and Middlesbrough. Local buses also connect the village with nearby towns. Durham Tees Valley Airport is around 20 minutes’ drive away and Newcastle Airport 50 minutes’ drive away via the A1.
