Charitable giving

  • A total of £385,913 was raised and donated Cancer Research UK (our charity partner), a 142% increase on last year’s total (2016: £159,228)
  • Total Bellway charitable donations amounted to £521,920 (2016: £284,704), an 83% increase on last year

Cancer Research UK was nominated as Bellway’s official charity partner for 2016/17 and we committed to ‘double match’ every pound raised by employees as well as make a donation for each customer feedback survey received. A total of £385,913 has been raised and donated to the charity, with employees, sub-contractors and suppliers fundraising accounting for £184,793 of this total. This success has seen the partnership extended for at least another year.

Bellway also tops-up employee fundraising for other charitable causes and each Bellway Division operates its own dedicated budget to support local charities and community groups. Across all our charitable activity, total donations amounted to £521,920, of which £229,047 was raised by employees from their colleagues, friends, family and our suppliers.

2017/18 targets

For the 2017/18 Bellway financial year, we have set a range of targets across our three CR themes (Environment, Construction, and Society and Economy). We have prioritised these targets and published our top 12 priorities across the themes for this financial year. This approach allows us to focus our efforts on the areas of greatest impact, while continuing to work internally on our additional targets.

Below you can find our public targets relating to energy.

We will extend our partnership with Cancer Research UK for a further year and aim to increase our fundraising and donation total across the 2 year period to at least £600,000

We will continue to encourage and support our employees in their fundraising activities, increasing the amount they raise for charity compared to 2016/17, by:

  • Matching their individual fundraising efforts
  • Introducing a Payroll Giving service to enable them to easily donate to their chosen charitable cause in a tax efficient way

Charitable Focus

We continue to develop our charitable engagement activities, with focus split across three key areas:

  • Supporting national charities – we enter into partnerships with charities who benefit from direct donations and employee fundraising.
  • Supporting our divisions – each operating division (and Head Office) manages a separate budget to support local charitable and community causes.
  • Supporting our employees – we double match fundraising for our national charity partner and ‘match fund’ employee fundraising undertaken for other causes.

National Support

Following a successful 18 month partnership with British Heart Foundation and Construction Youth Trust, we began a new relationship with Cancer Research UK for 2016/17. As a cause close to the hearts of many of our employees, we set ourselves the aim of raising £100,000 in the year for the charity

Local Giving

Each of our divisions has an annual budget which is used to support charities, community groups and other initiatives in their local area. Additional local charitable support is allocated from Head Office under the direction of our Charity Committee. We also make small donations through the Community Foundation of Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.

We financially support the running of a breakfast club in a local primary school in Newcastle upon Tyne as part of the Greggs Foundation Breakfast Club programme, with volunteers from Bellway visiting the club on a regular basis to engage with the children.

Case study

Cancer Research UK

Bellway began a new charity partnership with Cancer Research UK (CRUK) in August 2016 to help fund the vital work that scientists, doctors and nurses are carrying out to beat cancer sooner. CRUK does not receive any government funding for its life-saving research, so every pound raised and donated really does count.

Of the last 12 months Bellway employees have organised charity events, both in and out of work, ranging from golf days, sponsored mountain climbs and marathon runs, quiz nights, masquerade balls, dress down days, bake sales and sports days. The company also committed to double match employee fundraising and to make a £10 donation for every feedback survey received from customers.

A target of £100,000 was set but thanks to the hard work and generosity of Bellway staff, we have been able to donate an amazing £385,913 to help fight the battle against cancer. £184K came directly from employee and supplier fundraising, with the remainder from the company ‘double matching’ and customer survey donations.

The partnership has been so successful that we have extended it for at least another year and we aim to build on the funds already donated, increasing our total to £600,000 by the July 2018.
