Tamworth is a thriving market town located within Staffordshire, with great connections to the local countryside and the nearby city of Birmingham.

 

Education

Families are catered for, with a selection of well-regarded schools within around a five-minute drive from Barley Fields, including St. Leonard’s C of E Primary School, St. Elizabeth Catholic Primary School and, for older students (aged 11 to 16), The Rawlett School Academy and Landau Forte Academy QEMS. There are also future plans to build a primary school within the Barley Fields development (subject to approval).

For those interested in further education, the University of Birmingham is approximately 40 minutes’ drive from home.

 

Transport

Residents will benefit from good local road connections, including ease of access to the M6 and M42, both less than fifteen minutes’ drive away from Barley Fields. Tamworth town centre is approximately a five-minute drive from the development, via the A513 and Ashby Road/B5493, while Birmingham city centre is around a 30-minute drive away. Nearby Tamworth railway station offers regular services to major cities including London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff and Glasgow.

For international travel, Birmingham airport is less than half an hour’s drive from Barley Fields.

 

Shopping

Tamworth boasts a wide selection of retail opportunities, including several supermarkets, high-street and independent retailers, a shopping centre and three retail parks. Ankerside Shopping Centre, Cardinal Point, Jolly Sailor and Ventura Retail Parks host a range of brand name retailers and independent stores, as well as casual dining options. There is also a regular local market which takes place around three times a week, boasting approximately 100 stalls selling a range of products including fresh, local produce.

Nearby Birmingham offers a wealth of shopping opportunities, including the Bullring Shopping Centre, offering over 160 brand-name and high-street stores, a range of family-friendly dining options and a multiplex cinema. There is also The Mailbox and Grand Central, both shopping centres offer premium shops and department stores, as well as cafés and restaurants.  Birmingham also has several local shopping arcades and streets lined with everything from independent local stores to designer labels. Alternatively, the historic Jewellery Quarter boasts a range of independent and artisan jewellers. The city also presents a large indoor and outdoor market, which are open several days a week.

 

Eating and Drinking

In Tamworth, residents will find a variety of well-known chain and local restaurants, covering a range of cuisines, including several notable Indian restaurants. In addition, the town boasts a range of coffee shops and independent cafés. There is also a good selection of gastropubs and wine bars.

Birmingham offers a wide array of restaurants, covering international cuisines and award-winning curry houses, as well as many wine bars and pubs.

Within driving distance, there are a number of Michelin-starred restaurants the nearest of which is Peel’s at Hampton Manor, in Solihull, around 30 minutes’ drive away. This gourmet establishment has also won four AA rosettes and is known for simple, seasonal dishes, made with local or home-grown produce. Birmingham boasts several Michelin-starred restaurants, including Adam’s and Purnell’s, which both offer contemporary fine-dining experiences and are approximately a 40-minute drive from Barley Fields. 

 

Leisure

Barley Fields is ideally placed for outdoor pursuits. The development benefits from several public open spaces, including picnic areas and views of the lush Staffordshire countryside.

Tamworth is based on the River Tame, and near to the River Anker. Tameside Local Nature Reserve is located within a 10-minute drive from Barley Fields, along the River Tame, here visitors can enjoy local wildlife and nature trails. There are several lakes to enjoy in and around the town, including Borrow Pit Lake, less than a 10-minute drive from the development, while Cliff Lakes Water Park, Middleton, Belgrave and Whitemoor Lakes are all approximately fifteen minutes’ away by car. 

To the north west of the development, Cannock Chase is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (approximately a half an hour’s drive away) boasting picturesque views, public open spaces, as well as cycling tracks, walks and horse trekking.  For outdoor adventure activities, there is also a Go-Ape outdoor activity centre based in Cannock Chase, which offers rope based adventure climbing in the trees, as well as Segway riding through the forest. To the north east of Barley Fields, the National Forest is also conveniently located, approximately a 15-minute drive away, offering access to woodland trails and wide open spaces.

Tamworth offers several indoor leisure opportunities including a multiplex cinema, theatre and castle. Tamworth Castle is a Norman castle and historic Grade I listed building that also houses a museum. The SnowDome is an indoor snow and ice leisure centre which offers winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding and ice skating, as well as a swimming pool. The centre has real snow and ice facilities, including ski slopes, an ice skating rink and the UK’s only ice track.

There are two 18-hole golf courses within the area; Whittington Heath Golf Club offers play all year-round and Drayton Park Golf Club is set in 90 acres with four lakes, both are around an 11-minute drive from home.

Middleton Hall is a 15-minute drive from the development. This 13th century manor house is set in 42 acres of countryside and offers visitors a chance to explore the museum and gardens, which includes a heated walled garden, a lake and nature trails.

For family days out, Twycross Zoo is around a 12-minute drive from Barley Fields, boasting over 500 animals, including around 150 species, it is set within 80 acres of parkland. The zoo is also home to the World Primate Centre, where many endangered primate species can be found. Drayton Manor Theme Park is approximately a 10-minute drive from home, offering a number of rides and attractions, bars, restaurants and a 15-acre zoo. The theme park is also home to Thomas Land, a Thomas the Tank Engine themed adventure park with rides to appeal to younger children. For a wider range of amusements, Alton Towers theme park hosts over 40 attractions, including rollercoasters and a waterpark, and is around an hour’s drive from Barley Fields.

Birmingham boasts a range of entertainment, from galleries and theatres, to historic monuments and museums, including Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the NEC Arena, Weoley Castle and Birmingham Hippodrome.

Tamworth falls within the boundaries of both Tamworth Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council.
