Transport

For families, Charfield Primary School is around two minutes’ drive from St James Mews, while Katharine Lady Berkeley High School is only two miles away, less than a five-minute drive. The nearest university is the University West of England, Bristol, a 25 minutes car journey from the development.

There is a convenience store within walking distance of St James Mews, while the nearest large supermarket can be found in Wotton-under-Edge.

This thriving market town is home to many independent stores and boutiques, selling goods including fashions, arts, crafts, antiques, toys and books. A monthly farmer’s market also takes place in the town hall.

Eating and Drinking

There are three local pubs within Charfield - The Railway Tavern, The Plough and The Pear Tree Micro Pub are each less than a mile away from St James Mews. Each pub has its own unique character and presents their own take on traditional pub food.

A wider selection of local eateries can be found in Wotton-under-Edge, including local take-aways, cafés and restaurants.

Set in an old warehouse, split across two floors, Bordeaux Quay presents diners with provincial European cooking, using locally sourced ingredients, alongside an extensively stocked wine bar, upstairs. While downstairs, there is a New-York style brasserie, deli and bakery to explore, as well as a cookery school for budding chefs.

Bristol is also home to several Michelin-starred restaurants. Around 30 minutes’ drive from the development is Casamia - boasting one Michelin star and five AA rosettes. Serving British cuisine, its much praised set menu adapts, along with its décor, to reflect the changing seasons.

Leisure

St James Mews will be ideally placed for outdoor pursuits - situated only 1.5 miles away from the Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, covering over 800 square miles of countryside across five counties. Here visitors can enjoy countryside pursuits including fishing, cycling and horse riding, as well as water-based sports. There are several attractions to visit including the Cotswolds Wildlife Park and Gardens, where visitors can explore one of the UK’s largest collections of zoological animals, as well as the Cotswolds Water Park - an expanse of lakes and country parks.

For golf fans, Cotswold Edge Golf Club is around 10 minutes’ drive from St James Mews and has an 18-hole championship golf course, which offers picturesque views of the South Gloucestershire countryside and beyond.

Wotton-under-Edge presents several leisure facilities, such as Wotton Sports Centre, which has a range of sports facilities including a gym, sports hall, squash and tennis courts, as well as indoor and outdoor pitches. The town is home to an outdoor, heated swimming pool, complete with a retractable enclosure for cold weather. It also boasts one of the oldest cinemas in the UK, Wotton Electric Picture House, an independent cinema which shows a selection of commercial and arthouse films.

For movie fans, there are two multiplex cinemas, each approximately 20 minutes’ drive away from St James Mews, in Yate and Bristol.

Bristol and Gloucester offer a wealth of leisure and entertainment facilities for visitors of all ages. Bristol is well-known for its maritime history and boasts a range of cultural attractions including Brunel SS Great Britain, a 19th-century passenger steamship, docked in Bristol Harbour. This interactive museum allows visitors to explore life on-board a large, Victorian ocean liner. Millennium Square sits alongside the harbour and is home to the AT-Bristol Science Centre and Bristol Aquarium, as well as a selection of galleries, shops and restaurants.

For history lovers, Gloucester has a range of historic monuments and museums, including Gloucester Cathedral and The National Waterways Museum, with the latter based on Gloucester Docks. This popular port presents several attractions, including cruises down the River Severn or Gloucester Canal and Gloucester Brewery - a micro-brewery offering tours, a tasting room and a shop.
