Couple who bought Bellway showhome just turned up with their suitcases

A couple who thought they couldn’t afford to buy a house are now the proud owners of a three-bedroom showhome thanks to the Government’s Help to Buy scheme.
Chris Cooke and his partner Heather Lane visited Bellway Homes’ Byron’s Place development in Hucknall after discovering they could buy a property with just a five per cent deposit.
They were so impressed with development that they returned the following day and bought the showhome.
Chris, 25 and Heather, 26, had been renting an apartment in Mapperley for six months. Chris said: “We hadn’t looked to buy until this scheme was announced. We thought we would take a look at Byron’s Place because it was exactly halfway between where my mother lives and Heather’s parents’ house.
“It was quite a spur of the moment decision. We saw the house on the Saturday and went back to reserve it on the Sunday morning.”
Heather said: “We thought we would be looking at a two-up two-down house but we were able to buy a three-bedroom three-storey showhome.
“You can literally turn up with your suitcases and you’re in.”
Help to Buy applies to new properties worth up to £600,000. The buyer needs a five per cent deposit and a 75 per cent mortgage. The remaining 20 per cent of the purchase price comes from a Government equity loan which is interest-free for five years.
Chris and Heather, who both work as health club managers, arranged their mortgage through Bellway Homes’ independent financial advisor.
Chris said: “The best thing about owning our own home is having the freedom to be able to do what we want to it. Then 25 years down the line we will own something.”
Sales advisor Rebecca Lawrence guided the couple through the process. She said: “Help to Buy has enabled people to achieve something more than they may have thought they could - whether that be a detached property or in the case of Chris and Heather, a showhome.
“It has helped a lot of buyers to set up a home where they can stay rather than think about moving in a few years’ time.”
Byron’s Place is a development of three, four and five-bedroom homes close to the Nottinghamshire countryside and with excellent transport links to the city. Prices range from £157,995 to £340,995.
