When is a three bedroom house a four bedroom house, answer when it’s a Darwin

Housebuilder Bellway would have appear to cracked the eternal problem facing many home owners who are running out of living space and face the expensive prospect of moving home, by designing a house where the living space can be increased in size from three bedrooms to four bedroom without the need for any major construction.

Named after the grandfather of evolutionary thinking, Charles Darwin, Bellway’s Darwin starts life as a traditional two storey, 3 bedroom home. The difference is the living flexibility that has been designed into the Darwin.

A customer can select to purchase the standard Darwin home, or to pay a little extra in which case Bellway will incorporate Velux windows and loft trusses so that the buyer is able to convert the loft themselves at some point in the future. Alternatively, the Darwin can be bought as a 3-bedroom home with the roof space acting as a master bedroom with dressing area and ensuite bathroom. The first floor then provides two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A fourth evolution of the Darwin sees it as a 4-bedroom home with the loft space converted into 2 bedrooms and a bathroom.

Sales Manager at Bellway, Paula Murdoch, commented: “This really is a home for life, the flexibility of the living space responds to buyers needs now and in the future. Essentially we have created a home with 822 sq ft of living space that can be expanded to 1167 sq ft of living space. The cost uplift for the added living space is in the region of £30,000 and represents a significant saving on the cost of extending the living space in a standard home which in most cases would require the removal of the roof.”

Bellway will be introducing the Darwin at its Edison Fields site in Guiseley where the next Darwin’s will be due for completion in April. Prices start at £189,995 and rise to £259,995 for the 4-bedroom detached version.
